The latest trends in beauty come and go. You’ll be buying the latest beauty products you’ve been searching for, and then the next you’re reminiscing about older selfies and wondering, “Did I think that was cute?” Similar to as skinny jeans dominating our wardrobes (and are still for some individuals,) it’s true that certain trends in makeup will not allow us to go. Certain looks were daring, others were confusing, and some simply need to be discarded in the year 2016. Let’s go through time and see what we can find.
Winged Eyeliner
Whatever the trend is-fox eye, blurred liner or pastel shadows, winged eyeliner always hovers on the horizon. And I get it! We talked the other day and she’s an avid fan of the winged eyeliner. She wishes that it stayed forever and never gets out of fashion. If done properly the winged liner looks timeless and effective, giving the illusion of a longer lash, wider eyes, and an additional blast of the sass. But it’s rarely done properly. The perfection of these wings requires the skill of surgeons. For every flawless look with a winged appearance, there are five places that you can try to even out one eye, and then the other side, till you’re “subtle flick” looks more like a bulky Nike swoosh. But, we’ll never abandon the winged look. A well-designed wing gives you the “I know what I’m doing” feeling, even in the case that all you can remember is that you’ve spent 20 minutes with just one eye.
Thin Brows
Remember the days when everyone desired brows that looked like they were tweezed within an inch? A thin eyebrow was the epitome of “cool girl” beauty in the ’90s and into the early 2000s. The trend spread in a flash, and tweezers at our fingertips to remove any indication of fullness. Now, fast forward to the present and there are whole industries centered around bringing the sucker’s back (eyebrow serums microblading, lamination you know what it is). We’ve finally found our natural eyebrows, so let’s put the thin brows of the past and put them back in.
Rainbow Highlighter
I was among the people who lost their minds over the rainbow highlighter. I’m a huge fan of things that promise to make me appear like the unicorn of human form. We all found ourselves in the streets wearing a stripey and a vaguely purple tinge that looked more appealing on an Instagram post than in daylight. Do I have the original Compact? I sure do. Do I want to use it? That’s debatable. However, just like our fond memories of the glittery butterflies, it’s a joy to know that it’s available if I ever need it.
Heavy Contour
In the days of Kardashian dominance, contouring was not just an ordinary makeup tool it became an act of passage. Everyone was scrambling to master the techniques of shading our faces with something created, airbrushed, or made to look chiselled. Then, everyone became an inexperienced makeup artist who stacked layers of taupe, brown, and bone white cream to change what their face appeared to be. Sometimes, it worked, but a lot of times, it looked…heavy. Although contouring isn’t going away, however, new trends in gentler, more lightweight contouring are becoming the norm.
Concealer Lips
Lip concealers are a nightmare for anyone who enjoys makeup. In the past, there was a moment when we believed that putting concealer on our lips would create an appealing, natural appearance. But it’s not true. It makes you appear like you walked into a sandstorm. It’s a great concealer lips had a brief shine in the mid-2000s. But let’s not make a fool of ourselves by allowing fate to decide. There are a lot of gorgeous, bare lips on the market today that won’t make you appear like a pale blob.
Full False Lashes
False lashes provide a quick boost of confidence, and there’s nothing wrong with this. Sometimes, they’re huge and over-the-top; however, that’s part of the excitement! It’s true that they can be accompanied by discomfort, both during the application and when they disappear mid-dinner and fall off mid-dinner, but they’re definitely worth the effort.
A few of these trends could disappear, but we’re forever going to love them. So let’s throw on those (metaphorical) skinny jeans, rock our favourite old-school look, and keep experimenting -because beauty is all about the fun.
